This was the initial concept. In the end, I didn't use either of these methods; instead, I put an optical encoder (from a Mac mouse) into the tone arm of the turntable. The wheel of the encoder sat on, and was spun by, the record; it controlled the x-axis movement of the cursor, which was mapped to frames in a Quicktime movie.
