Childhood
1995
There is a fascination with childhood and play in the new media, as well as in New York. Computer people seem to have a fascination with the toys of their youth, and someone is always trying to re-create some old toy or another in digital form. Rock-em Sock-em Robots, Battleship, and especially Legos. Everyone loves Legos, those colorful little plastic building blocks. A programmer I knew in California had built an entire structure around his computer made of Legos.
There is a bar in the East Village called Babyland. Reportedly, they have a bunch of old toys and games there, and you can find people in their 20s and 30s regressing to their childhood, while getting smashed.
