Some people are trying to "humanize" the computer by making it more like us. To some extent, this is what is meant by "user-friendliness." But "user-friendly" does not have to mean anthropomorphizing the computer into a condescending, over-friendly animated character.

I don't want my computer to talk back to me.
I don't want it to be my friend.
I don't want it to say, "I'm sorry. I didn't understand what you said. Please repeat it."
I don't want it to cheerfully report its findings to me.
I don't want it to have a face, or body, that looks human.
I don't want "Bob."

I don't want an "intelligent agent." Jaron Lanier says that so-called "intelligent agents" presuppose that people are stupid; the smarter the agent, the stupider its user.

And by the way, isn't it true that the only two industries that call their consumers "users" are the computer industry, and the illicit drug trade?
