Image-based modeling Pioneered by Paul Debevec and popularized by programs such as the now-defunct Canoma, this is a method of creating 3D models from a series of 2D photos. Marc Pollefeys is also doing interesting work in this area. At SIGGRAPH 2002, he ran a session called Obtaining 3D Models With a Hand-Held Camera (identical to this one in 2000), and participated in another called Image-Based Modeling. Debevec presented work in A Lighting Reproduction Approach to Live-Action Compositing and Image-Based Lighting. He uses photographic imagery as an environment map, so that shiny objects reflect an accurate representation of real lighting conditions. (See also his 2000 course.) There were also sessions on Acquiring Material Models Using Inverse Rendering (using photos to create texture maps); 3D Acquisition and Image Based Rendering; Image-Based Environment Matting.
